Pre-Interview Reflection

I am choosing my preceptor for my nursing interview, she has portrayed an excellent leader during my journey with her. She exemplified a great leader and role model, which has encouraged me to reach out to her for a personal interview. Throughout my clinical journeys at UNE, I have struggled to connect with my instructors due to large clinical groups. I was able to truly connect with my preceptor due to the one-on-one time spent with her. Identifying her as a leader came naturally, she is always offering a helping hand which I feel is an essential part of being a leader. Her colleagues were often feeling overwhelmed as a result of COVID and staffing issues. She took the initiative to offer help when she noticed stress amongst her colleagues. Throughout my journey with her she had excellent time management skills which I believe is a crucial trait in a leader. Although she is not in a formal leadership position, she portrayed many of the qualities of an excellent leader.

I’m most interested in how she manages conflict, maintains a work/life balance, and what resources she has available to her outside of the workplace that supports her professional growth. I understand that she is not currently in a leadership position, which is why I would also like to ask if there are leadership positions available to her and the process necessary to move into a leadership role. My chosen leader did not only balance her job extremely well but she was also pregnant and seemed to balance life as a whole extremely well. It truly amazed me how she could do so well in the workplace and speak of a great home-life as well. I aspire to do great things in my future workplace but I also would like to thrive outside of the workplace. For all of those reasons, I’d love to ask her what resources she has for professional growth in the outside world. I wish to never cease growth, I’ve come to the conclusion that I can always strive to be better.

Very strong work! You have thoughtfully addressed all the assignment prompts and I have enjoyed reading your shared thoughts. It does sound as though the two of you have connected in a mentoring relationship and that’s a great way to learn. You have obviously given a lot of thought to what you want to learn from her/him and I look forward to reading your thoughts post-interview.
